In 2014 Wendl developed an educational and social platform called “Community as Family” for adults without reliable close family to help support those needs and decisions common to our later years. It has been meeting at least once monthly ever since at Temple Emanu-El here in NYC. The principles of Community as Family have been shared multiple times with faith communities, senior centers, and individual solo agers across United States as well as Mexico, England, and Ireland.
Among other publications, Wendl has been interviewed by Forbes, Kaiser Health News, the NY Times, 3rd Act, and the Davis Financial Group. It’s been her honor to present the Community as Family model to the United Nations Committee on Ageing, DOROT, Live On NY, the Jewish Board of Family & Children’s Services, NY State Senator Liz Krueger’s Roundtable for Seniors and Boomers, Riverside Church, and the Riverdale Senior Center.
As Community as Family approaches its tenth anniversary, Wendl is looking forward to sharing its story with everyone today.
